Refrigerated Wind Tunnel Tests on Surface Coatings for Preventing Ice Formation

This investigation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of various surface coatings as a means for preventing ice formations on aircraft in flight. The substances used as coatings for these tests are divided into two groups: compounds soluble in water, and those which are insoluble in water. It was found that certain soluble compounds were apparently effective in preventing the formation of ice on an airfoil model, while all insoluble compounds which were tested were found to be ineffective

HOLLOW MASSIVE TIMBER PANELS: A HIGH-PERFORMANCE, LONG-SPAN ALTERNATIVE TO CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER

Since the development of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), there has been a surge in interest in massive timber buildings. Furthermore, recent conceptual and feasibility designs of massive timber towers of 30 or more stories indicate that performance of mass timber structural elements can compete with other building materials in the commercial industry (MGB Architecture and Design et al.). However, in order for massive timber to penetrate the commercial market even further, a solution is needed for long-span massive timber floor systems. Unfortunately, CLT falls short in this area and is unable to span long distances. The hollow massive timber (HMT) panel presented in this thesis offers one potential long-span solution

Analysis and Utilization of Hip-Hop Techniques in Classical Music

ABSTRACT As of January 4th, 2018, R&B/Hip-Hop (including rap) had overtaken rock and roll as the most popular genre among music fans. Nielsen Music reported that rap had surpassed rock in terms of total consumption with rappers such as Drake and Kendrick Lamar leading the charge. This would lead to the second-highest growth of any genre of music, spiking at 25% over the previous year.[1] This came as a very big surprise to many, especially when we take into consideration the rocky at best relationship that rap has had with public perception. There are many misconceptions and biases about hip-hop/rap music and I hope that this document will shed some light on the artistic abilities and craftsmanship that is placed with care into many of these songs. I will show musical and poetic aspects by analyzing songs by N.W.A., Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, The Cunninglynguists, and Childish Gambino. I will evaluate and analyze songs by these rappers paying attention to their rhythmic devices, musical motives, and the connection between text and rhythm of the words. I will also show the growing world-wide appreciation of the genre by discussing artists from around the world. These selected rap artists will demonstrate not just the world-wide appeal of the rap music genre but will also show the power of their messages. I have selected these performers due to the lyrical abilities of the singers, the rhythmic motives that they use, and the overwhelming number of songs that are political or social in meaning. My hope is that by highlighting the craftsmanship, techniques, and poeticism of these artists that more classically trained composers could be inspired to create works that fuse these genres together. Ética profissional do professor de psicologia universitária versus uma paisagem multiparadigmal

This study aims to remind that psychology is a multi-paradigmatic science, which is why teaching psychology in higher education is eclectic in nature in order to reflect on the alternatives available in this respect. However, when it comes to practical performance, the personal theoretical orientation of each professor may lead him or her to opt for and present in an unethical manner topics that are not consistent with the desired outcomes of introducing students with the array of conceptualization options and their specific applications. This bias can occur when professors favor an alternative at the expense of others or make a biased comparison between them, forbid or penalize answers that they consider invalid, or neglect and avoid clarifying topics covered in class. This study highlights that the transmission of updated knowledge on a specific topic or domain is key for adequate faculty performance, which should rise above personal or professional preferences.En esta comunicación se recuerda que la psicología es una ciencia multi-paradigmática en la cual, por lo mismo, se ha optado por una enseñanza universitaria de tipo ecléctico para reflejar todas las alternativas. Sin embargo, a veces en el desempeño práctico, la postura teórica personal de cada docente puede inclinarle a que seleccione y exponga de forma poco ética temáticas incongruentes con el equilibrio deseado, a la hora de presentar a sus alumnos la baraja completa de opciones de conceptualización y aplicaciones características de cada una de ellas. Este sesgo puede cometerse de varias maneras: privilegiando la mención de una alternativa sobre otras o contrastarlas desventajosamente; prohibiendo o sancionando respuestas que no considera válidas desde su punto de vista; o desatendiendo u omitiendo aclaraciones sobre lo discutido en clase. Se remarca que el correcto desempeño de la labor docente requiere una adecuada transmisión de conocimientos actualizados acerca de cualquier temática o dominio que se enseñe, por encima de las preferencias personales y profesionales.Em esta comunicação recorda-se que a psicologia é uma ciência multiparadigmática. Por este motivo, optou-se por um ensino universitário de tipo eclético que reflita todas as alternativas. Porém, às vezes, no desempenho prático, a postura teórica pessoal de cada docente pode incliná-lo a selecionar e expor de maneira pouco ética temáticas incongruentes com o equilíbrio desejado no momento de apresentar aos seus alunos um leque completo de opções de conceptualização e das aplicações características de cada uma de elas. Diante de este viés, é possível agir de várias maneiras: privilegiando a menção de uma alternativa sobre as outras ou contrastando-as de maneira desigual; proibindo ou punindo respostas que não considera válidas desde seu ponto de vista; desatendendo ou omitindo esclarecimentos sobre o que foi discutido na sala de aula. Salienta-se que o desempenho correto do trabalho do docente precisa de uma transmissão de conhecimentos atualizados sobre qualquer temática ou domínio que ensine, acima de quaisquer preferências pessoais e profissionais
